A statistical approach to quality

To be able to guarantee delivery, accuracy and reliability, Western Industrial had to adopt a production environment for mold-making. We also realized early on that a certified quality system was needed. After careful consideration, ISO-9001 was chosen as our quality standard. We are proud to say that we are one of only a handful of mold making companies that has achieved the honor of being ISO-9001 Certified.

Defective parts are caused by variation. Variation pervades every aspect of the production process. The further a product deviates from nominal, the higher the costs and the lower the quality. By charting these deviations, Cpk, the measure of process capability, is derived. Working closely with our customers, we identify all critical dimensions. Typically using 20-25% of the part tolerance, these dimensions are tracked and documented throughout the manufacturing process. Even though we monitor every facet of manufacturing, in the end there are still process variations brought forth by the molding operation itself. In this stage we work with the molder, identifying and assessing any modifications that need to be implemented in order to bring the stability of the process up to the lofty goals of Cpk between 1.5 and 2.0.

Production control keeps every project on schedule and inspection assures consistent quality throughout. Multi sets of fixtures, setup tools and special gages are built to assure accuracy and interchangeability. Electrodes, EDM burning and final grinding are always done in-house to assure our high standards. Careful documentation and procedure analysis is crucial in avoiding potential disasters that could ruin multiple sets of cavities and bring projects to a halt.
